BYD’s new Flash charging network has hit 10,000 stations in China, with charge points available in 325 cities.

The numbers were revealed as the Chinese carmaker celebrated the opening of its 10,000th Flash charger in its home city of Shenzhen – at least the execs didn’t have to travel too far to cut the ribbon.

BYD says that it has reached over 1.8 million users for the Flash charging network, with a third of those non-BYD drivers – the chargers are open to other cars, but won’t meet the crazy 1.5MW charging speeds that BYD’s cars equipped with its Blade 2 batteries are designed to take.

The company has reached the milestone charge point figure in an incredible six months, only revealing its Flash tech at the beginning of March. Even taking into account the background planning and logistics that happened before the announcement, it’s still an incredible feat.

It means that BYD has averaged 55 new stations per day since the Flash charging announcement, at least according to one of the company’s bosses, He Zhiqi, who was at the 10,000th station opening.

Some of the Flash stations have been built under licence by third parties, so they’ve not all been built by BYD directly, but the company remains ambitious – its target for 2026 is still to have 20,000 Flash charging stations built in China before the end of the year.

There are plans to install 3,000 of the chargers in Europe before the end of the year too, with 300 of those in the UK. The new tech is a crucial part of the launch of BYD’s new sub-brand Denza, which is showcasing the company’s second-generation Blade batteries and super fast charging setup.

It was announced last week that rival manufacturer in the Chinese market, Hongqi, will be the first non-BYD carmaker to use the Blade 2 batteries. Hongqi makes posh Rolls-Royce style limos and SUVs.

The Flash chargers are very easy to use, as demonstrated by Vicky above. Check out her report from seeing the new charger in action
