The Electrifying Efficiency Rating Explained

There is currently no publicly accessible, industry-standard measure to help you understand the overall efficiency of an electric car. So we've created a clever algorithm to calculate a score which will allow you to easily compare cars before you buy.

Where to find it?

As you browse our reviews, look for the icon in the key stats, as below.

Why do we need it?

We’re all used to the miles per gallon figure quoted for conventional cars and what it might mean for our motoring costs. As electricity costs a great deal less than petrol or diesel, it’s easy to dismiss the efficiency of electric cars and think it is not important. But the cost of running a less efficient model can soon add up. Perhaps more importantly, an electric car which is more frugal will be able to go further and spend less time charging, which means more convenience for you, the driver.

How does it work?

The Efficiency Rating, known as the E-Rating™, has been reviewed and verified by leading independent industry experts and is formulated using an algorithm that takes into account a number of factors; including how well the car converts electrical power into miles on the road, the speed at which the battery can be recharged and features such as energy saving heat pumps, intelligent brake recuperation and climate control preconditioning. There’s also a ‘secret sauce’ based on our expert team’s experience of driving, testing and reviewing electric cars in the real world.

It's designed to help you find the best car for you and spend less money - and time - on charging.
