Google is adding a new function to its Maps app that will show electric car drivers the most energy efficient route as an option. The feature was trialled in North America last year and will be introduced across Europe in the coming weeks.

The new feature will highlight routes that use less energy if they have a similar ETA to other alternate routes. Users can also select the kind of car they use, with petrol, diesel, hybrid and full electric the four options. The mapping software then uses your selected fuel type to generate the most efficient route. The results are generated using  European Environment Agency mapping data, combined with Google Maps driving trends.

Drivers with diesel-powered vehicles will be routed along a high-speed motorways, where their engines will be most efficient, whereas someone with a hybrid or electric vehicle might get suggestions including A roads where they can take better advantage of regenerative braking and lower mileages.

To use, drivers need to create a route, then click the menu dots on the top right of the screen. With Route Options selected, users can then choose their vehicle type. The app will then suggest the most efficient route.

Google Maps app now allows drivers to select their fuel type and will show drivers the most efficient route
