Lexus has pulled the wraps off its fifth generation RX SUV, and the new line up includes a plug-in hybrid for the first time.

The PHEV is expected to be the best-selling RX model in the UK and features a four-cylinder 2.5-litre engine and a rechargeable lithium-ion battery with 18.1 kWh capacity. An additional electric motor powering the rear wheels enables full-time all-wheel drive.

The plug-in system produces 302bhp and is expected to deliver 0-62mph acceleration in around seven seconds. Overall, it offers roughly the same output as the outgoing RX 450h, but with more torque and faster acceleration.

The PHEV is expected to be the biggest seller in the range

Lexus’s target CO2 emissions on the WLTP combined cycle are less than 26g/km with fuel economy of less than 235.4mpg. The electric-only driving range of around 40 miles, which should be just enough to sneak it into the 8% tax band for company car drivers.

The RX has become a Lexus best-seller over the last two decades, with more than 3.5 million sold worldwide since its introduction in 1998 – including more than 300,000 in Europe.

The new car is slightly lower and wider to give a more squat appearance. There is also more luggage space and legroom. The boot has been made easier to access with a 30mm reduction in the loading height and is 50mm longer.

One of the new options is a leather-like interior trim that does not use animal products, created in response to growing demand from vegan and other eco-conscious consumers. The synthetic leather is used for the seats, steering wheel and shift knob, with a choice of colours.

The RX also has a ‘Lexus Mood Selector’ which allows the ambient lighting to be adjusted to suit the mood or the drive from a palette of 64 colours and 14 bespoke themes.

There’s no official word on prices yet, but expect the PHEV to start at around £70,000 and deliveries to start in Spring 2023.
