The MG4 and ZS EV have both been hit with £1,000 list price increases, despite the 4 only being on sale for three months. The newly-launched MG5 has escaped the increase, having already seen a rise compared to the pre-facelift model.

The MG4 received huge plaudits when it arrived in showrooms towards the end of last year as one of Britain’s best bargain electric cars. But if you wanted to grab this affordable, well equipped, good to drive electric family hatchback at less than £26,000, you might be too late.

The price of the basic SE model, with its 51kWh battery and official range of 218 miles, has increased by £1,000 in MG’s latest price list refresh. However, at £26,995, it’s still a relative bargain compared with the competition. 

The MG4 line-up features two ‘Long Range’ options, using a larger 64kWh battery pack good for 281 miles, and a more powerful 201bhp electric motor - the standard car’s electric drive unit produces 167bhp. Both of these versions of the car also now feature a £1,000 premium over their launch prices, the SE Long Range model from £29,495, and the range-topping Trophy Long Range from £32,495.

Elsewhere in the MG line-up, the ZS EV has returned to the price list after orders were suspended due to long waiting lists. The electric SUV was removed from sale last year, along with the MG5 estate, with MG citing “an unprecedented level of demand” making its 2022 order book difficult to fulfil.

With its new price structure in place, it’s no longer possible to get a ZS EV under the magic £30k mark. Prices for the standard range car capable of 198 miles on a full charge now begin from £30,495. The SE Long Range model - the cheapest version of the car with a 73kWh battery enabling up to 273 miles between charges - is available from £32,995, while the line-up is topped by the £35,495 Trophy Long Range model.

Don't expect one in a hurry though. Last summer, we reported a 14 month waiting list for new ZS EVs, though we understand the new wait time has come down to around 12 months.
