Renault could put its stunning Renault 8 Gordini electric concept car into production, with the French carmaker's boss revealing that a new Gordini model could follow the £135,000 Renault 5 Turbo 3E.

Speaking to Electrifying at the Paris Motor Show, Renault brand CEO Fabrice Cambolive suggested that the company is already considering its next ultra-exclusive electric performance car – and the retro-inspired Gordini could be a contender.

But there's a catch. Renault wants to finish selling its limited-edition Renault 5 Turbo 3E and begin customer deliveries in early 2028 before committing to another high-performance electric model. "We have to sell the R5 Turbo 3E first and to deliver the first examples, which will be the beginning of 2028," Cambolive told Electrifying. "I would have liked to be quicker, but we have to take the time to secure perfectly the cars, the best level of quality. But after Turbo 3E, Gordini could be one of the opportunities."

It's the clearest indication yet that Renault could turn its dramatic Gordini show car into a road-going electric performance model which, I think we can all agree, is something that we all want!

What is the Renault 8 Gordini electric concept?

The Renault 8 Gordini concept is a modern, all-electric interpretation of the legendary Renault 8 Gordini performance saloon from the 1960s. While the original was a boxy four-door sports saloon, the new concept reimagines its distinctive styling as a dramatic two-door electric coupé.

The car was one of the stars of this year's Paris Motor Show, attracting plenty of attention thanks to its retro design and unmistakable Gordini character. And we're not surprised. The entire Electrifying team fell in love with it, especially Ginny, who filmed a full walk-around video before the motor show opened.

Despite the excitement surrounding the concept, Renault executives confirmed to Electrifying that there are no plans to revive Gordini as a standalone performance brand in the same way as Alpine. Instead, the Gordini name could return on an exclusive electric performance model wearing the Renault badge.

Renault boss: Electric performance cars can still be emotional

For Renault, the response to the 8 Gordini concept demonstrates that electric cars can deliver the excitement, desirability and character traditionally associated with petrol-powered performance models. "My takeaway is that you can do an electric car with a lot of emotions, sportiness and desirability," Cambolive told Electrifying.

"Nobody has told me, 'Ah, it's electric, I don't like the car'." He added: "Frankly speaking, shifting to electric is a big move if you take the legacy of Gordini."

Renault has. of course, already tested whether buyers are prepared to spend serious money on an electric performance model with the Renault 5 Turbo 3E. The so-called ‘Hyper Hatch’ starts at £135,000 and is limited to just 1,980 examples, with more than 1,100 already spoken for. Customer deliveries are due to begin in early 2028.

Asked whether Renault was worried about finding buyers for the remaining Turbo 3E cars, Cambolive's answer was simple: "No." I can see why, given the appeal of Turbo 3E, which uses technology from Alpine's new APP platform - the same platform that will also underpin the next-generation all-electric A110. You can find out more about the platform and how the next A110 looks by watching my video.

The response to the Turbo 3E appears to be giving Renault the confidence to explore what could come next for the Gordini, but the Renault boss did confirm that "we have to sell the R5 Turbo 3E first, and to deliver the first examples, which will be the beginning of 2028."

Will the Renault 8 Gordini go on sale?

It won't be until after that, that Renault will make a final decision on whether to put the Renault 8 Gordini into production, so clearly at this point we haven't got specifics on price, specifications or launch date for a road-going version.

However, Cambolive's comments make clear that the company is open to exploring a new Gordini electric performance car after the success of the Renault 5 Turbo 3E. For now, the electric Gordini remains a concept. But judging by the reaction at the Paris Motor Show – and the enthusiasm of Renault's own boss – there's a chance this is one retro-inspired EV we haven't seen the last of.
