The UK government has launched a consultation on driverless cars that’s gathering input from members of the public, safety groups, experts and industry representations with a view to coming up with a draft set of safety standards around the tech.

The consultation, which closes on 9 September is running alongside a wider pilot that’s allowing self-driving vehicles to operate in the UK with paying customers for the first time.

The programme is intended to offer a mix of real-world conditions and controlled environments, with firms having applied to the Department for Transport to take part in the scheme.

Operators will have had to demonstrate how robust their safety systems are, as well as ensuring that vehicles are protected against cyberattack.

One aim of the consultation to gauge public perception of self-driving vehicles, and also to assess what safety measures need to be in place. A recent report indicated the difficulties in relying on passengers to intervene on any level in the event of a self-driving emergency.

The government has already indicated that it thinks the self-driving sector could be worth billions to the UK economy by the middle of next decade, as it presses ahead with the introduction of the tech.

Roads and buses minister Simon Lightwood said at the time of the consultation launch that it “means people will experience this technology first-hand in carefully controlled conditions, while [the] consultation is a step towards clear and permanent rules on safety.

“By setting clear expectations now and learning from real-world trials, we can support innovation, protect road users and help make Britain a world leader in this technology.”
