Volkswagen has unwittingly revealed part of its plan to bring back the legendary GTI badge with an electric twist.
The company has registered a new trademark which shows the classic font for the letters 'G' and 'T' but a lightning bolt instead of the 'i'.
Previously the brand has said performance versions of electric cars would be badged GTX, and this has already been used on the ID.5. However the X is thought to denote four-wheel-drive, and several upcoming faster models will have two-wheel drive only. These include the faster ID.3, which is rumoured to have more than 300bhp and rear wheel drive,
The concept version of the ID.2 also had 223bhp, which would make it eligible for a GTI badge.
It is thought the company will make an official announcement at the Munich IAA show in early September.
