Is this the biggest battery that's been fitted to a road going vehicle? Volvo has launched a new electric truck that go up to 435 miles on a charge – an impressive number, until you hear that the extended range version of the new Volvo FH Aero Electric has got a 780kWh battery. 

We don’t have an official WLTP figure for the consumption, but that’s a smidge under 0.6 miles per kWh efficiency. On the plus side the lorry is rated to tow up to 28 tonnes and the test is conducted with an average load, so it can’t get too much worse. (How does 435 miles compare to the longest range cars, though? The space for all those batteries has been freed up by integrated two electric motors and a six-speed gearbox into the rear axle, which produces up to 623hp all told. 

Despite the gigantic battery pack you won’t lose too much time charging – as long as you can find a plug that’s powerful enough. The battery will recharge at up to 700kW, which mean 20–80% in 50 minutes at peak speeds. If you’re stuck with ‘only’ 350kW chargers it’ll do the same in around 85 minutes, which is just long enough for a nice nap or an episode of Foyle’s War for those truck drivers who have to take mandatory breaks. 

A nice touch from Volvo is that there’s also an extra plug to run a refrigerated trailer off the main battery rather than needing a separate diesel generator. Handy if you’ve got a load of frozen chips or some chilled vegetables to get about the place. 

There are less powerful versions of the lorry that are able to be built flexibly into other setups, like cranes, tippers or urban delivery trucks. Volvo says all of its latest trucks are entirely competitive against equivalent diesel units and can match them during the day. 

The new range of trucks will be available from all good Volvo truck dealers starting from later in 2026.
