World smallest EV? VW shrinks the ID.Buzz for big train set

Worried EVs are becoming too large? A new version measures just 57mm long – about the size of two sugar cubes. It also features full self-driving technology and charges its battery through the door mirrors.

The Buzz has become the smallest moving vehicle in Hamburg’s famous Miniatur Wunderland – the largest trainset in the world. The replica – complete with roof rack and caravan – is in 1:87 scale.

The Buzz was quite a challenge for the model building team. There was not enough space for the motors and battery in the vehicle alone, so they expanded the storage space with a roof rack and stowed part of it in the colour-matched caravan.

After almost 200 hours of detailed work, the car started its maiden voyage through the model town of Knuffingen.

The miniature Buzz uses 4 volt technology, but also has a battery which needs to be charged. This is done by intelligent control electronics, with the Buzz automatically driving to the charging station.

The electricity for charging then flows through the exterior mirrors into the batteries and after about 30 minutes the Mini-Buzz continues its journey again. It even has working LED lights, like the real car.

The Miniatur Wunderland in Hamburg is the largest model railway layout in the world, with over 1,200 trains, 16 kilometres of tracks and detailed landscapes. The fictitious town of Knuffingen is one of the centrepieces – with a fully automated road traffic system.

Christian Schlüter, founder of Miniatur Wunderland, says: "We are passionate advocates of renewable energies and sustainable mobility. It's inspiring to see you travel the world with your beautiful car and trailer, being a true ambassador for the transformation to a greener future. If we can make even a small contribution to spreading this important message, then we are happy to support it from the bottom of our hearts.”
