What is a Super Hybrid System?

There are many drivers who aren’t quite ready for fully electric cars just yet but are keen to embrace the benefits which come with EV ownership. Most will need the security of a longer range without having to charge away from home, and a Plug-in Hybrid - or PHEV - means they will always have the backup of a petrol powertrain if needed.

The new Super Hybrid System used in the latest OMODA and JAECOO models sets new standards in terms of efficiency, convenience and comfort. The technology was first seen in the UK with the JAECOO 7 and has now been taken to even higher levels in the new OMODA 9 SHS.

This latest OMODA has class leading 93 miles of electric-only range, meaning the average motorist will be able to drive most of their weekly miles without using petrol at all, and only needing a single charge. For longer journeys using a combination of the energy in a full battery and fuel tank, the OMODA 9 SHS has a total range of over 700 miles according to its official figures.

The SHS models are plugged in just like any other EV

This is possible because of the OMODA 9 SHS’s unusually large lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) battery, which has a total capacity of 35.36kWh. This uses new internal chemistry that provides more energy from a lower weight.  Unusually for a PHEV, it can also be rapid charged at the DC points at speeds of up to 70kWh. These chargers are commonly found at service stations and supermarkets, allowing the battery to be replenished in just a few minutes.

The battery is never allowed to become completely empty, however. The SHS will always retain at least 20% of its capacity, which allows the electric drive to function and continue to provide the most efficient and effective propulsion. This means it has the efficiency of a hybrid even if you haven’t been able to plug in.

Backing up the battery is a 1.5-litre, turbocharged petrol engine, which can drive the wheels directly through a clever automatic, three-speed automatic gearbox called the dedicated hybrid transmission (DHT). At lower speeds the engine can be used as a generator to top-up the battery, letting the wheels be driven by the electric motors.

With the motors being their most effective at lower speeds where their natural torque comes into play, the petrol motor can be tuned to be efficient as the car goes faster, giving the perfect combination for power, refinement and minimal energy consumption.

The flexibility means the SHS system can be left to work out the best combination of power sources to match the driver’s demands perfectly and without compromise. The OMODA 9 SHS always has the instant response electric car drivers love combined with the higher speed and long-distance capability of a hybrid.

In addition to the automatic sensors, the OMODA 9 SHS offers six selectable operating modes (Eco, Normal, Sport, Mud, Snow and Off-Road) enabling drivers to adapt the powertrain across a wide range of conditions. In Sport it will accelerate from 0-62 mph in just 4.9 seconds thanks to a combined output of 449 PS and 700 Nm of torque – that’s more than some seriously sporty cars.

Different modes allow you to choose the best combination for driving in the city or on the open road

Despite this performance and the OMODA 9’s luxury specification, its efficiency brings much more than just fuel savings for company car drivers. An official emissions figure of just 38g/km and that long EV-only range mean it sits in the 6% rate band for benefit-in-kind tax in the 2025/26 tax year.

A different version of the SHS system is also used in the JAECOO J7 SHS, where it can boast an impressive official fuel consumption figure of 403 mpg and an electric-only range of 56 miles.

It also uses a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine, mated to an electric motor which gives a combined power output of 204PS. Electric power comes from an 18.7kWh LFP battery, which can be charged at home or at DC public rapid charge points.

Both the OMODA 9 SHS and JAECOO J7 SHS are available now to test drive and purchase from a network of 71 dealers across the UK.
