The IONIQ 5 N has an imaginary gear box, a fake clutch and it simulates the sound of a 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine, or even a fighter jet. You may well think that sounds a bit crazy. But after a first drive in the prototype and then spending time with the real thing in a studio, we can't wait to drive it properly.

Ginny Says

“If I was going to try and make a sporty electric car, I’m not sure I’d have started with an Ioniq 5. It’s a large five-seat practical, family car that doesn't exactly exude driving excitement. But having spent time with it in a studio I think Hyundai has transformed it brillianty. I'm particularly fond of the wonderfully named bright red NGB button which sends an extra boost of power to the motors when you press it. It's quite literally been made for me! I just hope it has the go to match the show.”

Tom Says

“The N version of the Ioniq 5 sounds like a hoot to drive and it could be the car which convinces petrolheads that electric can be exciting. On paper things are looking good, the head of Hyundai's N Division has form in creating performance packed drivers' cars. He recently engineered the Kia EV6 GT and was poached by Hyundai  rom BMW's M Division. But an engine noise generator, with the sounds of a fighter jet as one of the options?  I hope it sounds better than it, er, sounds. ”
