Hyundai has revealed more details and specifications of its forthcoming IONIQ 6 streamliner ahead of its arrival later this year. Among the most striking figures announced by the Korean brand is the estimated WLTP range which is quoted as 379 miles.

The new IONIQ 6 will be offered with two batteries - an entry level 53kWh pack and a larger 77.4 pack shared with the IONIQ 5. The larger pack will be available in both rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive form. Although the headline range figure of 379 miles is still an estimate at this stage, it marks a considerable improvement on the IONIQ 5 of 64 miles. Like the IONIQ 5, the 6 will be offered with a range-topping 320bhp dual motor version that delivers a 0-62mph time of 5.1 seconds. No official power outputs have been confirmed for the rear-wheel drive models, but these are expected to follow those the IONIQ 5. Should this be the case, the IONIQ will offer 171bhp in rear-wheel drive form.

Although the smaller 53kWh pack is smaller than the 58kWh battery currently offered in the IONIQ 5, the IONIQ 6’s efficiency advantage is likely to mean that it will offer more range than its hatchback stablemate.

Like the IONIQ 5, the 6 features an 800 volt charging system. This allows for considerably faster charging speeds and means that the IONIQ 6 will be able to charge to 80% in under 20 minutes when connected to a 350kW rapid charger. Hyundai makes no mention of a heat pump or battery heating system in its press release, but it is understood that battery heating (which can improve charging speeds in cold weather) will be fitted as standard, with the heat pump (which reduces electrical drain on the battery when using the cabin heater) will be an option.

Cabin features integrated twin infotainment screens and optional fully reclining comfort seats

The IONIQ 6 will come with Hyundai’s innovative vehicle to load (V2L) system that allows owners to power normal household appliances from the car. V2L is enabled using an supplied adaptor that slots into the outside charging port. In addition to the outside power outlet, there is a second outlet underneath the back row seat for charging laptops, phones and other devices.

IONIQ 6 will be the first Hyundai to offer the Over-the-Air (OTA) Software Update. According to Hyundai, this will allow drivers to upgrade the vehicle’s controllers for electric devices, autonomous driving and battery. Drivers can also update maps and media software with the OTA function.

In terms of design, the IONIQ 6 has an overall length of 4,855 mm, a width of 1,880mm width and is 1,495mm tall. The cabin is large and largely mirrors the IONIQ 5 in terms of layout and equipment. However, the 6 comes with a fixed centre console that incorporates the electric window switchgear (these are door-mounted on the IONIQ 5). Hyundai has yet to reveal the boot capacity of the IONIQ 6.

Like the 5, the IONIQ 6 has a dashboard that features an integrated 12-inch full-touch infotainment display and 12-inch digital cluster. The infotainment system provides real-time travel radius mapping based on the current state of charge. Digital door mirrors – which come complete with integrated dashboard monitors will be offered as an option.

The IONIQ 6 will be available in 12 exterior colours, including Gravity Gold Matte, Abyss Black Pearl, Serenity White Pearl, Curated Silver Metallic, Nocturne Gray Metallic, Nocturne Gray Matte, Transmission Blue Pearl, Biophilic Blue Pearl, Ultimate Red Metallic, Digital Green Pearl, Digital Green Matte and Byte Blue. For the interior, there are four colours available: Dark gray with light gray, Dark olive green with light gray, Black with pale brown and Black.

Hyundai has confirmed that IONIQ 6 production is planned to begin in the third quarter of 2022. The market launch schedule will be announced soon, but the UK is expected to be one of the first territories to receive deliveries. Prices and final UK specifications will be announced shortly.
