Vauxhall has finally released details of its twin-motor Grandland SUV, which will get a £1,500 price cut thanks to eligibility for the Electric Car Grant.

The British-badged twin-motor, all-wheel drive electric SUV will kick off at £36,995, but prices will actually start £1,500 lower at £35,495 thanks to the Government-backed incentive. Bizarrely, thanks to the scheme, the newcomer is also £1,500 CHEAPER than the equivalent spec 210bhp single-motor version, meaning customers are in the unusual position of getting a higher level model for less money.

The Grandland Electric AWD, as it's known, comes in just two trim levels – GS and Ultimate.

The lower-price of the two, GS, gets 16-inch infotainment screen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 10-inch digital instrument cluster, a wireless smartphone charger and 'phone box' storage, 19-inch alloy wheels, sporty black exterior detailing, illuminated Vauxhall badges, and an electric tailgate.

Meanwhile the loftier Ultimate model, priced at £36,995 (after the grant) adds extra tech, matrix LED headlights, a heated windscreen and heated front seats, a head-up display and posh Focal hi-fi system.

The all-wheel drive Grandland becomes the most powerful electric car Vauxhall has produced to date, with a total power output of 320bhp. It can hit 62mph in 6.1 seconds, while the 73kWh battery pack gives a claimed range of up to 311 miles. Maximum DC rapid charging is rated at 160kW giving a 20-to-80% top-up in 26 minutes.

There are four different driving modes - 'Normal' limits power to 313bhp through the front wheels with the rear wheels only engaging when necessary; 'AWD' gives 50:50 power and maximum power; 'Sport' splits power 60:40 between the front and rear wheels with heavier steering and sharper throttle response; 'Eco' mode restricts power to 215bhp.

The Grandland Electric AWD will also be eligible for Vauxhall's 'Electric All In' offer, that sees owners getting eight years of roadside assistance, and a £500 credit which can be used towards either an Ohme home charger installation, Tesco charging credit or Octopus Electroverse charging credit.

It looks the same on the outside, but the differences lie underneath
