Fancy some solar panels to make your EV home charging even cheaper? The UK government has your back.

Ministers have announced £15bn in subsidies and grants to improve efficiency and decrease energy bills in the country’s homes through a series of packages aimed at promoting batteries, heat pumps, solar generation and insulation.

It’s called the ‘Warm Homes Plan’, and part of it means government backed zero and low interest loans that will help households to fit new solar panels as well as batteries for energy storage. The government says that low-income households will also be entitled to extra support that covers the whole cost of installing solar at home.

The government is also introducing its ‘Future Homes Standard’, where solar panels will be a compulsory fit on new houses. The government says that its new strategy will triple the number of homes with solar panels fitted by 2030.

There are no firm details yet on how homeowners will be able to access the loans, but the government says that it will announce the process after consultation with finance providers and consumer groups later this year. It’s not likely that the loans will cover the installation of EV chargers compatible with solar panels

The prime minister said that the new plan was a “turning point” in reducing energy costs for households, while Octopus Energy founder Greg Jackson welcomed the initiative. “The ‘Warm Homes Plan’ is a really important step forward. Electrifying homes is the best way to cut bills for good and escape the yoyo of fossil fuel costs. Solar panels can slash energy costs - and paired with a battery we get the electricity when we need it.”
