Jeep's new Recon electric SUV can do proper off-roading

Are you looking to tear up the countryside but leave zero emissions behind you? Well this latest electric model from Jeep could be right up your green lane – it’s the Recon, and Jeep says it’s the first electric SUV to be trail rated (which is Jeep’s own strict internal test to make sure a 4x4 is up to scratch).

The US company says that it has combined a retro design with modern tech to create a fearsome electric off-roader. It’s also apparently the first electric SUV to come with removable doors, tailgate glass and rear windows, though we think that really depends on how quick you are with a screwdriver. No tools are required to air out the Recon, mind.

The $66,995 (£51,070) Recon goes into production at the beginning of 2026 at Jeep’s Toluca plant in central Mexico, with deliveries starting later in the year in the USA and Canada before spreading to other countries around the world.

It'll go on sale in the UK towards the end of 2026, and its presence in the Jeep line-up will help the brand when current electric efforts like the Renegade are much softer and more road focused. If you're currently in the market for a proper electric off-roader at the moment your options are limited to the expensive electric G-Class from Mercedes.

The Recon is set to be launched with just the one trim level available at first, the off-road focused Moab trim. More of those will be launched later on, most likely focused at on-road comfort for buyers who aren’t going to point their Recons straight at the nearest dusty canyon.

If you are into off-roading, the Moab specification Recon has plenty to offer. It combines 33in tyres (on 18in rims) and raised suspension to provide 231mm of ground clearance, as well as a 33.8-degree approach angle, 33.1-degree departure angle and 23.3-degree breakover angle.

It has two 340bhp Stellantis-sourced electric motors, one each on the front and rear axles to provide 4x4 capability, with gearing and power controls integrated within the motor housing. Those two motors combine to offer 650hp and 841Nm of torque, with 0–60mph possible in 3.6 seconds in Sport mode, while the car has a 112mph top speed.

Jeep says its engineers have tweaked the throttle response to deliver the electric power in a controlled way, while an electronic locking differential helps with off-roading. The front wheels also disconnect from the drive when the car is on the road to help with efficiency.

The mechanical bits underneath the car have been suitably beefed up for off-road running, while the 100kWh battery and 400V electronic system are protected by high-strength steel cladding.

Jeep hasn’t said yet what the maximum charging rate is for the car, but it has indicated that it’ll get from 5–80% charge in 28 minutes, so it must be a decent speed. Maximum range is up to 250 miles, though that will have been calculated on the EPA test, not the WLTP figure we’re used to.

Inside, there’s room for five in the suitably robust interior. There’s a 14.5in touchscreen infotainment screen and a 12.3in digital instrument panel up front, with electrically adjustable heated seats for front passengers, wireless phone charging, adaptive cruise control and a panoramic sunroof as standard. In the back there’s 858 litres of boot space, which increases to 1,866 litres with the seats down, plus there’s an 85-litre frunk up front.

Jeep boss Bob Broderdorf is understandably pleased with the company’s efforts. “The 2026 Jeep Recon is a bold step forward for the brand, an all-electric SUV that stays true to our core values of freedom, adventure and capability,” he said. “It’s trail-rated, purpose-built and ready to take Jeep enthusiasts into the future without compromising the legendary performance they expect.”

Ultimate off-road ability doesn't mean you need to skimp on creature comforts in the 2026 Jeep Recon
