KGM (the artist formerly known as SsangYong) has revealed its latest car – an electric pickup, which the company says “combines the economic benefits of an electric vehicle with the versatility of a pickup and the comfort of an SUV”.

The new truck carries the ‘Musso’ name, which will be familiar to fans of the Korean carmaker since it first appeared on one of the company’s SUVs back in 1993. It morphed into a pickup in 2018, where it’s now in its second generation.

It's an interesting area of the market – the latest version of the Toyota Hilux is gaining an electric version this year (available around the same time as the KGM), but otherwise your closest other option is to go for a plug-in hybrid Ford Ranger pickup.

The new truck has borrowed an 80.6kWh LFP battery from Chinese manufacturer BYD, which is good for 240 miles of WLTP range and rapid charging from 20%–80% capacity in 31 minutes on a 300kW charger.

Propulsion comes courtesy of two electric motors, at the front and rear for all-wheel-drive capability. It comes with V2L capability as standard, which means you can power your tools and things off the Musso while you’re out and about.

The truck itself is rated to carry a 690kg payload, and will tow up to 2,300kg, making it super practical. Even the tailgate has been reinforced to take 150kg of weight – KGM says that two adults can sit on it. Useful for tying your boots or having a cheeky picnic.

KGM has only shown us pictures of the front of the car for the moment, but we do know that there are dual 12.3in screens inside the cabin, formed of a digital instrument panel and a touchscreen infotainment system.

There is seating for five inside the Musso, with reclining seats in the back for maximum comfort. Could this be the perfect all-rounder for a sole trader? Well, we haven’t even told you the price yet.

KGM says the Musso starts from £42,495 including VAT and also including the £2,500 plug-in van grant that commercial vehicles are entitled to from the UK government. The Musso will go on sale soon, with test drive vehicles arriving at KGM dealerships in May.
