An all-new Lexus ES has been launched – and there is an all-electric version for the first time.
The new ES will include both full hybrid and battery electric powertrains – but no PHEV. There will be different power output options and the choice of both front and all-wheel drive.
The 5.1-metre long rival for the BMW i5 will replace the existing ES, which has been a fixture in the Lexus model range since the brand’s launch in 1989, although it arrived later in the UK. The new ES is a larger car in every dimension than its predecessor.

Two battery electric ES versions will be available: the ES 350e front-wheel drive model delivering an output of 221bhp, and the all-wheel drive ES 500e, with an output of 338bhp. Both use Lexus’ new eAxles which integrate both the power control unit and transaxle to keep it lightweight with compact packaging.
The 500e’s all-wheel drive system provides continuous adjustment of drive torque distribution to all four wheels, according to driver inputs and the road conditions. This can vary from 100:0 to 0:100, based on data from sensors monitoring acceleration, wheel speed and steering angle.

There is said to be more space for passengers and luggage compared to the previous version, and the interior has a minimal feel which buttons which are hidden when the car is switched off, like in a Nissan Ariya.
Oddly, the company has yet to reveal any specifications for the battery size or range targets. It will be launched in the UK and Europe with the start of sales from spring 2026. Details of UK specifications and prices will be announced in the next few months.
