Cupra, the sporting sub-brand of SEAT, has confirmed final UK pricing and specifications for its first all-electric car, the Born. The newcomer will be available with three combinations of power output and battery capacity: 58kWh 201bhp, 58kWh 227bhp e-Boost, and 77kWh 227PS e-Boost. 

The entry level 58kWh model starts from £34,715 and is available with all three of Cupra’s trim grades; V1, V2 and V3. Cupra claims a WLTP range figure of 264 miles for the 58kWh model, which should deliver around 220 miles in real-world driving. 

Sitting above the entry-level model, the 58kWh 227bhp e-Boost comes with more power and sharper acceleration. It can sprint from 0-62mph in 6.6 seconds - 1.3 seconds quicker than the standard model. Drivers can activate the power boost by pressing a button on the steering wheel. The e-Boost model has a WLTP range of 261 miles and can be specified with V2 and V3 trim levels. Prices start from £37,445 on the road. 

At the top of the launch range is a 77kWh battery model that comes with e-Boost as standard. Priced from £40,215, it can be specified in either V2 or V3 trim grades. CUPRA quotes a WLTP figure of 340 miles for the range-topping version, which should result in around 280 miles of real-world range. In terms of performance, the 77kWh e-Boost has a 0-62mph time of 7.0 seconds. 

All three trim grades appear to offer a decent amount of standard kit, with the entry-level V1 coming with 18”alloy wheels, LED headlights, sport bucket seats, rear-view camera and adaptive cruise control. V2 versions ad 19” wheels, a heated steering wheel and a head-up display while V3 variants come with 20” alloys and fully electric seats with a massage function.

58kWh models can charge at speeds of up to 120kW on a rapid DC charger, and can be recharged from 5-80% in around 26 minutes. The larger 77kWh battery can charge at 135kW on a rapid charger and can be charged from 5-80% in around 36 minutes. On a 7kW home charger, the two batteries will take eight and 11 hours respectively to charge from empty to full.

Cupra Born vs Volkswagen ID.3 - how do they compare?

It’s no secret that the Cupra Born and the Volkswagen ID.3 share a host of components. While the ŠKODA Enyaq and Volkswagen ID.4 share a platform, battery and motors, they differ significantly in terms of interior and exterior design. With the Cupra Born and ID3, the design differences are less noticeable.

In terms of cost, the ID.3 range starts at £35,845 for the basic Life model. At the time of writing, this is the only ID.3 available to order due to the component shortage crisis that is affecting the entire automotive business. However, even comparing like-for-like with this single model, the Cupra is both cheaper (by £1,130) and appears to come with a more generous standard specification, including alloy wheels. 

Cupra is taking orders for the Born now and expects first customer deliveries to be made in the summer.
