Type casting – Jaguar finally has a name for its new electric GT

Jaguar has been teasing its new electric GT for quite some time now, and has been not building cars for long enough that we might have to start thinking of it as some other form of company, but the company has finally revealed… that the new car has a name.

And we won’t keep you in suspense like Jaguar has been doing – the Coventry-based marketing firm is calling its next car the Type 01, and it has an explanation for every element of that name.

Jaguar says that the ‘Type’ harks back to its history, while the ‘0’ refers to zero emissions and the ‘1’ shows that this is the first of a new generation. It’s no Lepas, but it’ll do.

The new Type 01 is not going to be revealed in its final production form until later in the year, but we’ve already driven a prototype version of the car and come away with good impressions.

The four-door GT will have a triple-motor 1,000hp powertrain offering plenty of performance on tap – no word yet on the battery size and range, but we’d imagine that both numbers will be considerable.

Jaguar says that the Type 01 and the cars that follow are set to be underpinned by a design philosophy characterised by “exuberant modernism”, with bold design and original thinking. It was announced last month that Jaguar Land Rover had parted ways with its head of design Gerry McGovern

Jaguar boss Rawdon Glover said: “We have reimagined Jaguar for a new era, with inspiration from what has gone before. Our engineers have achieved this with a vehicle that looks and drives like no other electric car, yet reflects a unique provenance.”
