Polestar’s flagship electric SUV has rewritten the record books, with a production-spec Polestar 3 Long Range Single Motor travelling 581.3 miles on a single charge – a feat officially recognised by Guinness World Records.

The distance is 143 miles further than the car’s official WLTP range of 438 miles, and comfortably eclipses the previous record for an electric SUV. The attempt was undertaken by professional efficiency drivers Sam Clarke, Kevin Booker and Richard Parker, who took turns at the wheel in three-hour stints over a near-23-hour run.

The completely unmodified SUV averaged 5.13 miles per kWh and ran on standard 20-inch wheels shod with Michelin Pilot Sport 4 EV tyres. Weather conditions were mixed, with heavy rain and standing water during part of the route increasing rolling resistance and making efficiency gains harder to achieve.

Guinness World Records judge Paulina Sapinska oversaw the attempt, with fleet telematics from Webfleet providing detailed odometer readings, GPS data and battery telemetry. Safety cover was provided by the AA in case the vehicle ran out of charge far from a public charger.

The Polestar 3 reached its official WLTP range with 20% battery still remaining, and even managed an additional eight miles after the gauge read 0%, before making it to a charger without ever stopping completely.

Polestar UK managing director Matt Galvin called the achievement “truly impressive”, adding: “For a large luxury SUV to go way beyond a London-to-Edinburgh distance is testament to how far EV range has improved in recent years. Combined with our real-world success in Norway’s El Prix winter range test earlier this year, it proves long distances are perfectly achievable with minimal fuss."
