Renault has confirmed that its updated Renault 5+ and Renault 4+, which get new 52kWh batteries from the company’s French Douai gigafactory, qualify for the full £3,750 UK electric car grant (ECG). The sportier version of the Renault 5, the Alpine A290, also gets the same French-made 52kWh battery, and is now eligible for the full £3,750 ECG.

The UK’s ECG was announced in summer 2025 and is expected to run until summer 2027. You can read all about it – and find out which cars are eligible – in our full guide to the ECG, but the grant amount is dictated by the electric car’s environmental credentials including where it’s built and where its battery is sourced. Previously, the Renault 5 and Renault 4 were eligible for the lower, £1,500 grant. But Renault has now confirmed that it is launching the Renault 5+ and Renault 4+ models, with that little ‘+’ symbol denoting that the battery now comes from its French factory, and meaning that the cars are now eligible for the full £3,750 ECG.

The Renault 5 range still starts with the 40kWh urban range model, which gets the £1,500 grant and costs £21,495 after the ECG has been deducted. But the new Renault 5+ range starts with the techno+, priced at £23,945 after the full £3,750 government-backed EV grant is deducted. The iconic five+ comes in at £25,945, while the range-topping roland garros+ costs £26,945 (after the ECG).

The Renault 4+ range costs from £23,445 for the evolution+, £25,945 for the techno+ and £27,945 for the iconic+, after the full ECG has been deducted.

You don’t only get £3,750 off; there’s more kit, too. Both the Renault R5 and R4 models now get a contrasting black roof on the techno+ trim, while top-spec iconic five+ trims (and the Renault 5 roland garros+) now get a Harman Kardon sound system.

WLTP range will stay the same, though, as Renault and Alpine's new in-house NMC battery keeps the same 52kWh usable battery capacity, meaning that the Renault 4+ and Renault 5+ both manage around 250 miles of range, while the Alpine A290+ returns an official range of just under 240 miles.
