Skoda has brought back its Favorit hatchback and 'reimagined' it as an EV for the 2020s, but the bad news is that you won't be able to buy it.
The Favorit was a well-known five-door hatchback built between 1987 and 1994. It marked a changing point for the Czech brand as before it the carmaker was famous for building awkwardly shaped rear-engined models. It was a hugely popular car across Europe, and was the last Skoda to be developed before the manufacturer was acquired by Volkswagen.
Now, Skoda has reinvented the car for the 2020s with designer Ljudmil Slavov creating a concept that takes key design themes of the brand's latest models. The reborn Favorit wears Skoda's current ‘Modern Solid’ theme which has recently appeared on the Elroq and revised Enyaq SUVs.
Slavov said: “I didn’t want to rely on current design elements like the Tech-Deck Face. This is a tribute to the Favorit, so I carefully studied the original details, aiming to evolve and elevate them. Simplifying an already minimalistic shape into the Modern Solid style was genuinely challenging.”
But there are some nods to the past with the general shape of the car, plus the LED headlights that are set behind semi-transparent covers, aping the 1980s classic.
Skoda insists that the Favorit show car just forms part of a planned run of 're-imaginings', though, and has no plans to put the car into production.
