Much like with a bus, sometimes you wait ages for a car and then one turns up at once. 

When Land Rover launched the latest version of the Range Rover back in 2021 we were promised a new electric version of the car within a few years, but that got pushed back first to 2025 and then to 2026. 

This new car is really really on the way though, because Land Rover has just announced that it’s definitely on sale, it sent through some prices and everything. 

Ginny already drove a prototype version of the Range Rover Electric at Goodwood and liked what she saw – without the stickers on though, it’s… still exactly the same.

Land Rover says all it has changed on the outside is to add a new aerodynamic grille, different wheels and a sculpted undercarriage to help the car slip through the air more efficiently. Otherwise it’s all business class as usual.

The car’s 118.5kWh battery uses 800V tech for ultra-rapid 350kW charging that gets you from 10 to 80 percent in just 22 minutes. The Range Rover Electric has a WLTP range of 372 miles, which is more than enough to get you somewhere that less than 372 miles away, but then you can charge on the way of course. 

Range Rover says the car has been driven 38 times around the world during physical testing – which probably explains why it’s taken so long to get it on sale – but it has meant that there’s been no compromise on the car’s notable off-roading ability.

Orders are open for the car already – there are eight different derivatives to choose from, starting with the EV550 Autobiography SWB version that starts at a mildly eye watering £154,070. The First Edition version is another £3k or so and there’s an SV version after that that will cost you from £176k. 

If you’re feeling especially punky then the stretched EV550 SV Black LWB version of the RRE costs £225,240 – there’s an SV Ultra LWB version above even that, but the price just says ‘POA’. Phew – get those blank cheque books out. 

What about the Range Rover Electric’s rivals? 

It could be a side effect of the prolonged gestation, but the RR Electric lags behind almost all of its main posh SUV rivals in terms of range – the BMW iX manages 426 miles, the Mercedes EQS SUV does 410 miles and the Porsche Cayenne Electric 405 miles. 

The Lotus Eletre is a sportier, road-focused luxury electric SUV, but the 2022 car manages 373 miles of WLTP range in its base trim. The car that the Range Rover Electric does beat handily is the similarity off-road focused electric G-Class, which only manages 291 miles of range. 

The Range Rover Electric is also the most expensive car of this group... save for the G-Class again, which costs another £800.

The Cayenne probably poses the biggest threat to the Range Rover from a tech point of view – you can order the Porsche with wireless charging – and then we'll soon see the wraps getting taken off Bentley's new electric contender, the Torcal.
