The new Range Rover Electric has finally gone on sale after years of waiting, and I've driven it. 

Range Rover's first fully electric model costs from £154,070 and has a claimed range of up to 372 miles. It can charge from 10–80% in 22 minutes using a suitably powerful rapid charger.

I got behind the wheel at Goodwood to see whether an early version of the new electric luxury SUV could match the reputation of the world's finest 4x4. 

And electricity turns out to be the perfect fit for the Range Rover – it's as quiet, refined and imperious as ever.

When Land Rover launched the latest version of the Range Rover back in 2021 we were promised a new electric version of the car within a few years, but that got pushed back first to 2025 and then to 2026. 

But what took the company so long? Land Rover says all it has changed on the outside is to add a new aerodynamic grille, different wheels and a sculpted undercarriage to help the car slip through the air more efficiently. Otherwise it’s all business class as usual.

​Range Rover says the car has been driven 38 times around the world during physical testing – which probably explains why it’s taken so long to get it on sale – but it has meant that there’s been no compromise on the car’s notable off-roading ability. 

The car’s 118.5kWh battery uses 800V tech for ultra-rapid 350kW charging that gets you from 10 to 80 percent in just 22 minutes. The Range Rover Electric has a WLTP range of 372 miles, which is more than enough to get you somewhere that's less than 372 miles away, but then you can charge on the way of course.

Orders are open for the car already – there are eight different derivatives to choose from, starting with the EV550 Autobiography SWB version that starts at £154,070. The First Edition version is another £3k or so and there’s an SV version after that that will cost you from £176k. 

If you’re feeling especially punky then the stretched EV550 SV Black LWB version of the RRE costs £225,240 – there’s an SV Ultra LWB version above even that, but the price just says ‘POA’. Phew – get those blank cheque books out. 

All versions of the Range Rover Electric come with 22in alloy wheels, active noise cancelling tech, four zone aircon that filters the air of pollution on its way into the cabin, fancy air suspension, opening panoramic sunroof, heated and ventilated massage front seats, plus a Meridian sound system. 

The First Edition model throws in a fridge in the centre console, a seat built into the tailgate and special illuminated tread plates, while the SV versions upgrade the drive with fancier air suspension and an electronic differential, and there's an interior upgrade with plush leather seats.
