Two-thirds of Electrifying survey respondents say they won't use a self-driving car

Two-thirds of respondents to a recent Electrifying.com survey said that they wouldn’t use a fully autonomous, self-driving vehicle.

It comes as the government announced it was pressing ahead with UK trials of autonomous taxi and bus services, inviting interested companies to apply to the Department of Transport for pilot projects to go ahead later this year.

There’s still some work to do to convince even those people who are will to try the new technology – 34% of respondents said that they would use a self-driving vehicle, but only a quarter of people didn’t have any issues with the tech.

The biggest problem that people had was they said they didn’t trust technology to replace human judgement. This goes against one of the government’s stated aims behind forging on with introducing autonomous vehicles – it says that 88% of collisions on UK roads are caused by human error.

Other worries expressed by the survey respondents include concerns about glitches or hacking, fears that the cars would make mistakes and uncertainty over who would be liable in the event of an accident.

Over a thousand people responded to the survey, which shows the lingering doubts that self-driving tech will have to overcome before it’s widely accepted. A recent ride round Tokyo in a self-driving Nissan Ariya was enough to convince Ginny of the potential of the tech.

Tech firm Waymo has its fleet of Jaguar I-Pace models circulating across London already, with safety drivers behind the wheel as the cars get used to the unique qualities of the UK capital’s roads.

A hidden benefit of self-driving cars was revealed recently – Waymo's fleet of cars in the US is set up to report potholes to local authorities

The upcoming autonomous pilot projects will be the first time that members of the public will be able to book and pay for journeys in self-driving taxis and buses on British roads.
