They’ve been getting very busy in the updates department at Volvo lately – last week we had upgrades to the EX40 and EC40 electric SUVs and this week we’ve got new long-range plug-in hybrid versions of the XC60 and XC90 revealed. 

Both cars still sport the same 2.0-litre petrol engine as back-up, but with new and more powerful 177hp e-motors on board, there will be fewer situations where the combustion part will need to help. 

The XC60 comes in two flavours – T8 and T6 – that both offer all-wheel drive and the same 37.9kWh battery, but different power outputs from the petrol engine. The more powerful 250hp T8 manages 117 miles (189km) of WLTP range and the 180hp T6 will do 124 miles (200km) on a charge. 

There doesn’t appear to be CCS charging available from the information that Volvo has sent out so far, but the cars will charge up to 11kW and full up in four hours on a three-phase supply, or six hours on a more standard 7kW wall box setup. 

The long-range XC90 PHEV just comes with the 250hp T8 powertrain, the same 37.9kWh battery setup and 102 miles (164km) of WLTP range from a full charge. 

Volvo has taken the opportunity to update the XC60 in a similar way to last week’s EX40 announcement – interior upgrades (new 11.4in screen with Google Gemini and some updated materials) and styling tweak on the outside that include new bumpers and swankier looking headlights, as well as improved safety kit. 

There’s no word on the prices yet from Volvo, and the new versions of the cars aren’t yet ready on the Swedish carmaker’s online configurator.
