Volvo has revealed a series of tweaks to its EX40 and EC40 models to keep them fresh. 

You’ve got new bumpers at the front and rear (apart from on the EC40, that’s fine as it is), fresh lights and upgrades to the tech experience and interior as well. 

Inside, the cars get a new 11.2in infotainment screen (much bigger than the old 9.0in one) with a new UX setup that Volvo says has been designed so that you don’t have to go through as many menus and prods to get what you want done. 

The EX40 and EC40 also get Google Gemini for the first time, a voice assistant that’s billed as something that you can have a conversation with. Just don’t ask for its views on Brexit. 

There are new interior trim lines and materials available, as well as a swathe of safety tech updates that include a new lane change assist function on the adaptive cruise control and a 3D view to the 360-degree parking camera. 

The wireless phone charger has been updated too, among other interior changes like the ambient lighting that’s available for the first time. It’s all been designed with everyday usability in mind, says Volvo.  

Volvo also says you can enjoy up to 357 miles of range from the cars (Single Motor Extended Range if you want the full whack). You can read our review of the existing version of the EX40 and EC40 models, which we’ll update as soon as we’ve driven the newest versions of the cars. 

The EX40 and EC40 are the electric hatchback and coupe versions of the stalwart XC40 model that was introduced way back in 2017. Sure, it’s almost 10 years old, but if you’ve got a good thing going why get rid of it? 

We don’t have any updated prices from Volvo, but they’re not expected to go up much. Production on the upgraded EX40 and EC40 will start soon, with deliveries beginning early in 2027.

Interestingly, the electric version of the XC40 is being ditched from North American line-ups, and is expected to be replaced with a new EX50 towards the end of 2027. Will this be an EX40 replacement in Europe too? We’ve not heard of any plans for a second-generation EX40 yet…
