Xiaomi has unveiled a new range-topping version of its SkyNomad N90 SUV that is literally going to raise the roof wherever it goes.
The new SkyNomad N90 Max Studio, to use its pedigree name, costs a sniff under 300,000 yuan in its home market of China (£33,000) and comes with a factory fit pop-top roof that’s not like anything you’ve ever seen on a passenger car.
The spec is bonkers – the roof lifts electronically, the second row of seats folds down (also electronically, no sense in having to do anything yourself) into a bed, the floor is heated.
Alternatively, if you go for the next spec down without the pop-up roof you get the folding bed and there’s a 30in screen that folds down from the ceiling to provide the ultimate in home (away from home?) cinema or serves as a privacy screen from the front.
These versions even come with electric side steps if the leap to the cabin is a bit too much of a strain, and cupboards built in by the boot at the back of the car for storing your things for an overnight stop.
Inside the raised roof is an integrated foam mattress and windows on all sides, plugs for charging and aircon vents to keep you warm or cool depending on the season.
It’s not a camper van though – Xiaomi describes the car as a “mobile studio”, aiming for the rich digital nomad and social media influencer crowd.
Take the 4K ring light built into the 11in mirror in the cabin for example, that the Chinese carmaker says is perfect for doing your makeup.
The car is a beast – over 5.2 metres long and just under 2.0 metres wide. The seven-seat cabin has a 2+2+3 layout for maximum luxury inside, and Xiaomi says there’s enough space in the boot for all seven passengers to take a cabin suitcase with them.
The front four individual seats all rotate, there’s a pull-out table for important business meetings (or lunch, just saying) and they offer what Xiaomi calls a “zero-gravity mode” that we think just means lying down, but with the level of tech involved here you can’t be too sure.
The D90 Max is a range-extended EV, with a petrol engine on board that’s used for charging the battery, which explains the modest (for a tank of these proportions) 76kWh battery.
Xiaomi says the car will manage a 288-mile range (464km) on the optimistic CLTC procedure used in China, with over 1,050 miles possible (1,700km) once you factor in the fuel tank.
The SkyNomad N90 Max Studio is not coming to the UK, but rarely have we wanted a car this much – perhaps we’ll need to move to China.
