Ginny Says

“VW has nailed some of the interior quality issues that were originally criticised in the ID.3, and have made a well-rounded, useful family SUV with the ID.4. A proper range, plenty of space and decent performance - it's a real rival to the Tesla Model Y.”

Nicki Says

“The ID.4 really hits a sweet spot with its SUV style and practicality. There are still some areas where it feels a bit compromised - that touchscreen could be more user friendly, for sure. Even so, it's a good family car. ”

Pound for pound, the ID.4 compares well with its rivals – even against its Skoda Enyaq sister car.

Pricing

Having launched with a one-off ID.4 First limited edition in early 2021, the ID.4 range has grown quickly. There's now an ID.4 to suit everyone, ranging from the more affordable Pure and Pro Match models, up to the sport ID.4 GTX.

Our pick of the range is those Match models, and we'd go for the longer-range 77kWh ID.4 Pro. Match gets 19-inch alloy wheels, keyless entry, powered bootlid, reversing camera, heated seats, climate control and LED headlights, so it really does get the stuff that you really want. You can also add the panoramic glass roof to the ID.4 Match, for £1000, which will be a popular option for a lot of buyers.

There's also the ID.4 Black Edition trim, which adds leather, massage seats, the pano roof and electric lumbar adjustment, so do check that out if you want all the fancy equipment - but it is quite a bit more expensive than the Match models. The GTX is a lovely car to drive and has all the equipment you want as standard, but it's a bit too expensive to be recommendable, and we'd say that the Ford Explorer, BMW iX3 and Kia EV6 are both more fun to drive if it's a sportier family EV that you're after.

Pricing and equipment overall is competitive - even against the Skoda Enyaq that shares the same platform. And it gets more equipment than most as standard, so make sure you factor that in when you're doing the maths.  There are some good PCP finance deals that include low interest and low deposit offers, so on monthly finance we'd expect the ID.4 to be one of the more competitive, with prices from around £400- to £600 per month depending on your contract parameters.

Running costs

Not only is the ID.4 decent value when buying, it shouldn't cost too much to run either. A full-charge overnight will range from around £13- to £20 depending on your energy tariff, and you can halve that if you use an off-peak tariff

Servicing

The ID.4 doesn't need annual services, instead Volkswagen recommends a check-up every two years. The three year, 60,000 mile warranty is a little on the stingy side though; Kia, Hyundai, MG, Toyota, Lexus, BYD and Tesla all offer usefully longer warranties as standard.

The battery in the ID.4 is warrantied for eight years and 100,000 miles.

Insurance

Insurance costs have gone up in recent years, for every car - not just for electric vehicles. However, the ID.4 is one of the cheaper electric family SUVs to insure, and is very competitive with its key rivals. Always get a personalised insurance quote before you commit to any car, as insurance costs can vary wildly depending on your address, driving history, which way the wind is blowing and what colour your underwear is.
