BMW's new X5 SUV will come a range of power options, including hydrogen for the very first time.
Called iX5 Hydrogen, the hydrogen fuel cell-powered car will sit alongside full-electric, plug-in hybrid, petrol, and diesel versions, meaning the fifth-generation X5 will offer the broadest-ever selection of power options in a BMW. It's been given the green light after successful trials of a prototype in 2023, said the carmaker.
Set to arrive in 2028, the iX5 Hydrogen is expected to offer more power than the prototype version: a 187bhp hydrogen fuel cell stack with a 295bhp rear electric motor and 313 miles of range. The fuel cell stack itself is co-developed with Toyota, and offers greater power density and efficiency despite being 25% smaller than the original prototype's system.
The car is predicted to use BMW's long-serving CLAR platform, rather than the new iX3's Neue Klasse EV platform. But pictures of a camouflaged iX5 Hydrogen show that the production car will use the Neue Klasse design language as already seen on the iX3.
