Government announced £18m boost for electric truck discounts

The £3,750 discount offered by the UK government’s electric car grant might seem generous, but hauliers are being given up to £120,000 off the price of a new electric HGV thanks to an £18 million boost to the plug-in truck grant that extends the offer until March 2026.

The grant is applicable in different levels – smaller trucks (4.25 tonnes to 12 tonnes) could save up to £20,000, mid-sized trucks (12t to 18t) get up to £60,000 off, larger trucks (18t to 26t) up to £80,000 and the biggest lorries (those that weigh 26 tonnes and over) can get up to £120,000 off the list price.

The Department for Transport minister responsible for decarbonisation, Keir Mather, said that the move would prove certainty for truck operators. “We’re backing British businesses to go green by making electric lorries more affordable,” said Mather. “Helping hauliers to make the switch whilst turbocharging growth, investment and jobs in the sector.”

The £18m boost for truck sales is added to a £120m fund that has enabled struggling small business like Amazon and Marks & Spencer to run more electric delivery vehicles. The DfT says that the ‘zero emission HGV and infrastructure programme’ will have enabled 300 zero emission trucks to be rolled out by March 2026.

The government also announced that it was launching a consultation on the steps to banning non-zero emission trucks from sale by 2040.

Registration figures for HGVs in 2025 haven’t been released yet, but the latest figures available for the nine months to the end of September 2025 show 408 zero emission trucks sold in the period.
