Europe’s most electric friendly road trips revealed

Avoiding the airports and fancy a road trip instead? The Netherlands has been named Europe’s most electric car friendly country to road trip around this summer, according to the rental company Hertz.

The company has compiled a list of ten of the best routes in Europe to take your EV road tripping, ranking them by the average number of chargers per mile.

At the top of the list is the Netherlands with an average of more than 14 chargers per mile. Hertz’s suggested route starts in Amsterdam and travels around the country, seeing Rotterdam, Zeeland and Eindhoven along the way. The route ends back in Amsterdam, creating a 175 mile loop that has access to over 2500 charging points.

Next up is Northern Italy, with an average of nearly five chargers per mile. Compared to the abundance of chargers in the Netherlands it seems like a relatively low number but there’s still plenty of charging locations to ease any range anxiety. The route travels through Milan, Turin, Monza and Lake Como, with a mix of urban and countryside driving.

With four chargers per mile, the Côte d'Azur comes third on the list. This route shows off the French Riviera from Cannes to Monaco, covering four cities in just 34 miles. The area benefits from an urban infrastructure that can support reliable EV charging, whilst travelling along the French coastline.

Other coastal trips listed in the top ten include Rome and the Amalfi Coast with over 2 chargers per mile and Valencia and the Costa Blanca with nearly one charger every mile. More rural routes like the French Alps and Catalonia feature, offering on average one charger every two miles.

The top ten gives EV drivers peace of mind that road tripping is possible even with an EV. In the past two years EV breakdowns from running out of charge have halved, with improved access to charging stations and more apps that show charging locations and availability. Many EVs can now add up to 100 miles in just over half an hour with 50kW chargers, making charging stops quicker and more convenient.
