Ford’s E-Transit Custom is being upgraded with an ‘enhanced’ battery pack, faster charging and the option of a twin motor version for the first time.

While the new battery pack is not physically any larger, new internal chemistry and software tweaks have unlocked more usable capacity, giving the 2026 model year versions with 71 kWh, up from the previous 64 kWh. This gives a 10% improvement in driving range, taking the new total to 231miles.

Charging speeds have also improved, with a 10-80% DC fast charge taking approximately 29 minutes with a 125 kW DC charger – a 10-minute saving. An upgrade will also be offered to existing E-Transit Custom drivers, using an over-the-air update which will reduce the 10-80% charge time to about 25 minutes – a 14-minute saving.

The company has also introduced a new twin motor version which give the E-Transit all-wheel drive for the first time. It adds an electric drive unit for the front wheels – in addition to the existing one for the rear wheels – and precisely controls the torque sent to all four wheels depending on the driving conditions.

It will be available in combination with a wide selection of trim levels, with total power outputs of 136hp, 218hp, or 286hp, although the highest power is exclusive to Sport and MS-RT models. The AWD system can be specified with a full choice of E-Transit Custom body styles, including Van, Kombi, Double-cab and MultiCab.

The top version can deliver 630 Nm total motor torque from standstill – that’s over 50% more than rear-wheel drive version and 30Nm more than a 3.0-litre diesel Ford Ranger.

There should be plenty of grip too, as the motors monitor wheel slip up to 50 times per second with real-time torque adjustments. Having two motors also means 50% more regenerative braking force can be applied to increase energy efficiency at lower speeds and even optimise stability in challenging conditions.

Prices have yet to be announced, but production will start in early 2026.

The highest power option is reserved for the Sport and RST versions
