Orders are open for Jeep's new Grand Cherokee 4xe - only available as a Plug-in Hybrid

Jeep has opened orders for it's new Grand Cherokee 4xe, available only as a Plug-in Hybrid. The PHEV will launch with a turbocharged 2.0 litre petrol engine combined with a 17kWh battery and a pair of electric motors that will Jeep say will give you 32 miles of electric range in urban areas.

This will be Jeep's third Plug-in Hybrid, following on from the release of the smaller Renegade and Compass crossovers and is part of their commitment to stop producing traditional internal combustion vehicles in 2022 and move towards offering an electric-only line up of models in Europe by 2025.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee will be available as a Plug-in Hybrid only

The new PHEV Grand Cherokee will have the 'Quandra-Drive II 4x4' drive systems and 'Quadra-Lift' air suspension. It will also have the 'Selec-Terrain' traction management system, offering five driving modes; Auto, Snow, Sand/Mud, Rock and Sport. All of which results in it being just as capable off-road as the current Cherokee.

The 4xe will have a broader track and new 21 inch alloy wheels, which are the largest ever on a Grand Cherokee. Inside, the 4xe will debut with the 'Summit Reserve', which has technical features as standard than ever before. There is a new centre console with a 10 inch screen, wireless charging and another 10.25 inch interactive display for the front seat passenger. The list doesn't end there, as the 4xe will also have a night vision camera, digital rear mirror, full-LED headlights, park assist, collision warning and a pedestrian and cyclist detection warning system.

Following on from the Grand Cherokee will be the new Wrangler 4xe, which is claimed to be the best-selling PHEV in Jeep's home market of the United States. The Wrangler will arrive in the UK later this year with the same drivetrain as the Cherokee and up to 25 miles of electric-only range.

It list of technical features as standard is the longest ever seen for the Grand Cherokee

There are still no details of Jeep's first electric-only offering, but if it's anything like their Wrangler-based Magneto concept with a manual transmission, we'll all be fighting for the first drive!
