Mercedes has revealed the new electric third-generation GLA – and it looks pretty good, we think

New Mercedes-Benz GLA is a small SUV with grown-up touches (and a huge frunk)

Another day, another new car from Mercedes, and this time it’s the cute little GLA that’s getting a makeover.

And like other recent cars from Mercedes like the GLB, the standalone electric version has been dumped and the EV powertrain folded into the main model family. Exciting times.

So this means no more EQA, and a bit more distance from the A-Class model range as the GLA comes more into its own as a distinct SUV model rather than a heightened hatchback. It’s getting launched as an electric model first, with a petrol hybrid following later.

Ginny has been over to have a look at the new car – which I think looks pretty good, it must be said, especially with the twinkle in its eye the Mercedes logo in the headlights gives it – and she liked the space and the quality.

Not so much a fan of the ginormous touchscreen infotainment setup, though… is that a trend that can quietly be done away with? The GLA does remain, however, a fancy Mercedes despite being one of the company’s entry models, so that’s something to be pleased about.

We like the newly enlarged 410-litre boot, plus the huge 107 litres of frunk under the bonnet (only just smaller than the Model Y’s 117-litre number). There are lots of fancy big car touches available on the GLA – the Mercedes light-up grille, Superscreen nonsense, panoramic sunroof and 320kW of 800V rapid charging.

There will be two battery sizes available – 58kWh and 85kWh, LFP for the former and NMC for the latter. That means range is anywhere from 260 miles to just over 400.

We don’t know the full prices of the new GLA just yet, but we do know that the 58kWh entry car starts from £45,400, which is a lot more than the recently heavily discounted and electric car grant enabled (but rather older) BMW iX1.

We know which one we’d prefer to drive, but we also know which one our wallets would like more…
