The car that will become the Leapmotor B03 when it’s launched in the UK next year has had its official unveiling in China. 

The little electric hatchback is known as the A05 in its home market, but for whatever reason the car will get a little name change when it heads this way in early 2027. 

It’s the dinkier version of the B03X crossover SUV (the A10 in China) that’s set to arrive on these shores in the next couple of months, and I first had a glimpse of the car covered in washi tape when I was in China for the Beijing motor show earlier this year. 

Size-wise the B03 is going to go up against the likes of the Volkswagen ID.Polo and Renault 5, but they’re probably in another league both style-wise and price-wise. 

The Leapmotor is more than likely going to be on the same shortlist as the BYD Dolphin, Fiat Grande Panda and Citroen e-C3, and it’ll follow the Chinese carmaker’s strategy in the UK of selling a single well-equipped model at a very competitive price. 

The Chinese version of the car is rated at 317 miles (510km) of CLTC range, which is the Chinese test procedure. That would equate to around 260 miles on the European WLTP measure. 

The B03 is set to arrive with a 53kWh battery (there’s a smaller 39.8kWh option in China that likely won’t make it to Europe and definitely not to the UK). 

Our favourite feature on the B03X crossover looks set to survive on to the smaller hatchback – the rear lights with the happy little smiley face that will cheer up the cars behind you as you cut them viciously off on your way to the shops.
