Nissan will reveal its new electric city car on 23 September and it's called the Pixo

Put 23 September in your diary (should already be there in fairness, between 22 and 24 September) because Nissan has announced that it is going to unveil its new electric city car on that very day.

We have a name to sustain us through the difficult next two weeks as we wait for this exciting occasion – the new car is set to be called the Nissan Pixo.

Hardcore Nissan fans will remember that the Pixo was sold as a rebadged version of the Suzuki Alto from 2009 to 2013. The car was never a great success, because the donor model was built cheaply for the Indian market, but carmakers were more optimistic back then, hoping that they could create one low-cost profitable car that could be sold the world over.

Does Nissan have the same dream today? It does not, for the new Pixo is set to be built in Europe and has been designed with European drivers in mind. Shall we take a look at that scant teaser image we've been sent through again? Why not. It actually promises a perky experience from the Pixo.

Now, we should temper expectations somewhat at this point – the new Nissan Pixo is based on the Renault Twingo and is set to be built in the same factory in Slovenia as the Twingo and the recently revealed Dacia Spring that’s also built on the same shared base.

Let’s just remember all that fuss about the Nissan Micra and the Renault 5 and keep our fingers crossed that Nissan’s been able to spend a bit more on changing things up a bit. The Dacia Spring has shown that it can just about be done, right?

Like Dacia, Nissan is also believed to be targeting an £18k entry price, but we’ll hopefully find out more in a couple of weeks when the Pixo is officially unveiled. Keep an eye on Electrifying.com for the latest.
