Nissan teases new all-electric Micra

Nissan has given us a glimpse of the next Micra, which is going all electric for the first time and could offer a range of more than 250 miles with a price of less than £20,000.

The new car will be launched in 2024 and will share its hardware – and a production line in France - with Renault models including the reborn versions of the classic 4 and 5 models

It’s thought new Mitsubishi models will also be made using the same motor, battery and underpinnings, which could pave the way for the brand’s return to the UK.

Sharing the components will give the companies economies of scale, which will keep prices low while offering competitive technology. The new Micra is said to offer a 250 mile range from a battery which is 10% smaller than a current Zoe, giving it a capacity of around 45kWh. The cheapest version of the new car is expected to cost under £20,000.

The Renault-Nissan Alliance is working with suppliers to achieve even more scale and affordability. It says it will be able to reduce battery costs by 50% in 2026 and 65% by 2028, making batteries cheaper than combustion engines.

The new Micra will be the first electrified version of the model. Insiders say the existing model, launched in 2016, was originally designed to be an all-electric car but slow sales of the Leaf and Zoe at the time of its development meant the plan was scrapped and it was rapidly converted to accept petrol power.

The teaser picture of the new model shows it will be rounded and curvaceous, steering it away from the angular styling of the current car and returning to the cuddly curves of the 1993 K11 Micra, which was one of Nissan’s longest-lived and most successful models.
