Owl'd they do that? Aspark sell out of Japan's first fully electric hypercar

The Aspark Owl is Japan's first fully electric hypercar, with million dollar looks and a 2.9 million Euro price tag. First revealed by Aspark as a concept at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show, the Owl has had one setback after another, meaning its production kept getting pushed back. Some were saying it might never happen, but not only is it happening, it's sold out.

There are a few very good reasons why it has. 2012 of them, in fact. Aspark claim that the Owl delivers 2012 horsepower, which is 1984bhp and 12 over that of the Lotus Evija.

The performance numbers across the board are pretty impressive, if you can believe them. With a limited top speed of 250mph, 2000Nm of torque and a 0-60mph time of just 1.6 seconds, this car is all about going fast. Compare that 1.6 second time with a formula e car, which is 2.8 seconds and you get some idea how fast this Owl can go.

The sleek design is all about improving the aerodynamics, whilst the carbon fibre monocoque reduces weight to get the most from those performance numbers. The heaviest part of the Owl are the batteries, which is where the numbers become less impressive. The overall weight is 1900kg, heavy for a hypercar, yet the battery pack is mounted centrally to help with weight distribution and handling. Another poor number is the luggage capacity, which is just 50 litres. That's a third of the size of the Tesla Model S frunk, but then you aren't buying the Owl for its hoot. I mean, boot.

The numbers improve in the battery, which is 800V and the same as a Porsche Taycan, with a capacity of 64kWh. Aspark say that it can charge in as little as 80 minutes. The estimated range of 280 miles isn’t impossible either with a light car and good aero. But if you use any of the performance it will disappear faster than a field mouse in a barn full of owls. In the real world, you'll probably have to drive around at a crawl to get anywhere near it. Perfect for driving about in Chelsea, then.

The Aspark Owl is fully sold out, despite some concerns over previous delays

"But why is it called an Owl?" I hear you ask. Well, it's not because it looks like one. According to Aspark, it's because owls are silent when they are flying to hunt their prey and being electric, this car is able to 'silently' hunt its prey on the road.

The aerodynamic look of the car means that the driver sits almost level with the top of the wheel arches and the overall height is just 993mm. That's about 13mm lower than a Ford GT40 and makes the Aspark Owl the lowest road legal car.

Each wheel has carbon ceramic brake discs and callipers with 4 pistons in each of the rears and an incredible 10 pistons in each of the fronts!

The design is incredibly aerodynamic. It's so low to the ground, it's the lowest ever road legal car.

The interior has all been handmade and with some of the switches on the roof, it feels more like the cockpit of an aircraft than a car.

The inside feels more like a plane cockpit than a car. There are switches on the roof. The roof!

It all sounds very impressive and perfect if you're a multi-millionaire that cares more about performance than practicality. If you are, you've probably already bought one of the 50 Owls that have been sold. If you're not, you're probably not too upset to hear that Aspark are not making any more than those 50 and have therefore 'sold out'.

Well, apparently. At the time of writing, you can still register your interest in owning one on the Aspark website. Perhaps they are considering making a few more?

If you are already a proud owner and Aspark do only make 50 though, it probably means the value of your Owl will only ever increase in value. The rest of us will have to just be content to admire the Owl from afar as it 'silently' overtakes its competitors. For the moment.

Unfortunately, all are now sold.
