Is Skoda's naming department out of control? New seven seater is the Peaq

The electric seven seater that Skoda has been promising for years is about to drop (in the summer, don’t get too excited), finishing the journey started by the Vision 7S concept (shown in the pics here) way back in 2022.

Skoda knows how to build the tension though – we’ve been given a sneak Peaq at the name of the new car and it’s as bad as the Czech carmaker’s recent Epiq efforts to wind us all up with weird looking badges.

The company says that the name of the new car reflects its status “at the top of the portfolio”, which in marketing speak means that it’s not only going to be the biggest car in the Skoda line-up with a honking great battery pack and seven seats, it’ll also likely be the most expensive.

The Peaq has already been trailered with the Vision 7S concept that was revealed back in August 2022 – that concept was the beginning of Skoda’s ‘Modern Solid’ design era. The company says that the design stands for “robustness, functionality and authenticity”.

The concept car was given an 89kWh battery with 200kW charging and a 373-mile range, all of which could be plausible for the new car. The biggest pack that the Volkswagen Group currently has on its MEB electric platform (that the Peaq will share with cars across the portfolio, including the VW ID.Buzz, Audi Q4 e-tron and Skoda Enyaq) is a 77kWh usable number. The Group’s fancier ‘premium electric’ platform supports batteries up to 108kWh like in the new Porsche Cayenne.

For some reason everyone thought the Peaq was actually going to be called the Eviatiq, which admittedly makes the choice of Peaq look much better. Skoda apparently registered the Eviatiq name as a trademark, maybe it was worried someone else might steal it first. Could it still appear on a production Skoda? Fingers crossed it won’t.

Skoda will also be revealing the final production version of its Epiq small electric SUV this year, another launch that’s expected by the summer. It’s going to be a busy year if you’re working at Skoda.

Obviously it wouldn't be admissible as a noun, but Skoda's new badge would be worth 15 points in Scrabble
