smart has confirmed pricing and final specifications for the #1 – the brand’s first purpose-built electric car. The five-door hatch is due to hit retailers in the summer and will launch with a four model range with prices starting from £35,950.

Described by smart as a ‘compact SUV’, the newcomer is the same size as a Volkswagen ID.3 with a length of 4,270mm and a height of 1,636mm (just 68mm taller than the VW). Boot space ranges between 411 litres to 986 litres while all three launch models are rated to tow loads of up to 1,600kg.

The range at launch will consist of four models: Pro+, Premium, BRABUS and a Launch Edition. All feature a 62kWh battery pack as standard.

The entry-level Pro+ is priced from £35,950 and comes in rear-wheel drive form and a power output of 200kW. It can be rapid charged at speeds of up to 150kW and delivers a WLTP range of 260 miles on a single charge. Standard equipment includes a panoramic sunroof, ACC (Adaptive Cruise Control), heated seats, a 360-degree surround camera, intelligent voice assistance, LED lights and a powered tailgate.

Premium models start from £38,950 and add a Beats sound system, Head-Up Display, Matrix LED headlights and Automatic Parking Assist. Premium cars also feature faster (22kW) AC charging and a higher WLTP range figure of 273 miles thanks to a heat pump. smart will also offer a Launch Edition based on the standard spec of the Premium model. Just 100 cars will come to the UK (priced from £39,450) and are set to feature what smart describes as “unique design traits and exclusive aesthetics”.

Topping the range from launch will be a high performance BRABUS variant. Priced from £43,450, the flagship model will feature all-wheel drive and a power hike to 315kW. This, according to smart, will be enough to propel the BRABUS model from 0-62mph in 3.9 seconds. Standard kit will include bonnet vents, contrast paint and 19-inch Dynamo wheels. Inside, the BRABUS will feature an Alcantara steering wheel, microfibre suede seats, red seatbelts and metal pedals.

All #1 models will feature an all-new infotainment system built around a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8155 intelligent chipset an 8-core CPU processor. According to smart, this makes it the most powerful mass-produced car-level chip presently on the market. Displayed via a 12.8-inch central control screen the system also integrates Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard.

The #1 will be the first smart model to be sold directly via the brand. Although customers will still be able to test drive and place orders via the existing dealer network, buyers will also be able to spec and order their car via a new smart website. All models come with three years’ servicing included as standard, along with an eight year / 125,000 mile warranty on the battery pack.
