What started as a trickle is turning into a flood. Smart has decided to join the likes of MG, Leapmotor, Alfa Romeo, Volvo, and others, in introducing its own discount scheme for new cars.
Called the "Smart EV Car Grant", the initiative sees £1,500 being wiped off the prices of the #1 and #3 SUVs. These models already had savings on them, so, with the addition of the grant, total savings are £3,500 on each car. Prices now start at £28,460 for a #1 and £31,460 for a #3.
Announcing the move, Smart CEO Jason Allbutt said: "We’re very proud of the fact that Smart’s award-winning EV range unites the best of premium design and cutting-edge technology. In line with our commitment to opening minds toward electric mobility, our #1 and #3 already offer exceptional value for money.

"This initiative will provide customers in the market for a new car with immediate confidence in their access to Smart’s most competitive prices, avoiding leaving buyers in limbo while the industry adapts to evolving external influences."
Confusion still remains over which cars will be entitled to receive as much as £3,750 off their purchase prices under the recently announced Government-led Electric Vehicle Grant. Ministers have remained tight-lipped about eligibility criteria, leading to rumours that cars and batteries built in China may not qualify and a whole swathe of China-associated car brands slashing prices early.
