The best cars for towing have been revealed, with half of the cars awarded being cars with plugs.
The recommendations come from the Caravan and Motorhome Club's Towcar of the Year awards. The 43rd running of the original towcar competition marked a real shift towards electric-powered cars, both with pure-EVs and plug-in hybrids.
Of the 37 cars entered into Towcar of the Year 2026, 14 were pure-electric models and five were plug-in hybrids, with many of these cars coming ahead of petrol and diesel-powered entrants.
The overall Electric Cars winner was the recently revamped BMW iX in xDrive60 M Sport guise, and BMW's range-topping electric SUV was also took the caravan weight over 2,000kg category.
Skoda's updated-for-2025 Enyaq 85x was named the winner of the caravan weight under 1,300kg category; the Nissan Ariya e-4orce Evolve took the 1,500-1,600kg award; the Genesis GV60 was the winner of the 1,600-1,700kg weight category; while the brand new Porsche Macan Electric impressively scooped the heavyweight 1,800-2,000kg category.
Meanwhile, Volvo's recently refreshed XC90 T8 PHEV was took the Hybrid Towcars category win.

The judging took place at UTAC Millbrook Proving Ground, Bedfordshire, in the summer. After scrutineering and tests for practicality, the cars were then hitched up to caravans ballasted to 85% of their kerbweight, or towing limit if lower.
