This is the blocky new fifth-generation Hyundai Tucson, returning in PHEV form in 2027

Hyundai has revealed the first images of its radically changed new Tucson that’s set to go on sale in 2027 – one of its five-model attack on the car market in the next 18 months.

The family car looks set to make the transition from sleek lifestyle SUV to chunky off-road oriented lifestyle SUV, with blocky features using what the Hyundai calls its new ‘Art of Steel’ design language.

And the new Tucson doesn’t just look bigger and chonkier, it actually is much bigger – but that comes with a caveat.

In the UK we get a short wheelbase model that’s designed to cater for European tastes, while other countries with the sort of space for herds of wildebeest to swing majestically get a longer version.

This is the longer version, and based on the information released by Hyundai HQ in Korea it’s a massive 70mm longer than the current longer Tucson, nearly 40mm wider and 30mm taller.

The current European car loses around 130mm to the global version, which means the one we get on sale could still be significantly bigger.

Inside, the look of the car will be familiar to Ioniq 3 or Inster fans, with a wide shelf featuring a giant touchscreen plonked in the middle. That’ll be running Hyundai’s latest generation Pleos Connect system that we’ve liked so far.

The digital instrument panel is a thin screen that sits on top of the dashboard giving you all of the essential bits of information.

As one of Hyundai’s fancier models, the Tucson will aim to bring a touch of quiet luxury to proceedings, though it remains practical with some hidden storage, a double wireless charging pad for phones and clips for Hyundai’s new accessory system.

Will the new Tucson go electric? In a word, no, but we will get an upgraded version of the PHEV, which currently offers 43 miles of WLTP range. Hopefully that’ll get beefed up for this new fifth generation car.

Hyundai does have a load of electric car updates coming soon though – we’re expecting to see both the new Kona and the Ioniq 5 models in not too long.
