Trailer maker sheds the pounds to make way for EVs

Brian James Trailers (BJT) has revealed a new lightweight trailer which is designed to avoid busting legal weight limits when towing with an electric vehicle.

The Race Transporter 7 (RT7) is approximately 200kg lighter than the equivalent-sized Race Transporter 6 (RT6), providing a higher load capacity to carry or tow with heavy vehicles such as EVs.

The weight limit for towing in the UK is 3.5 tonnes (3,500 kg), including the trailer. Cars are getting larger and heavier, with models such as the Kia EV9 and Land Rover Defender PHEV weighing around 2.7 tonnes. The only solution is to manufacture lighter trailers, which BJT has done with the RT7.

The lighter trailers will also make towing with an electric car more efficient, meaning drivers will not have to charge as often.

The RT7 is available in black or white bodywork and tri-axle or twin-axle models. Extra height versions of each model are available as an optional upgrade, too. Prices start from £25,500 plus VAT, and the largest models with all options selected are close to £40,000.

A 200kg weight saving means EV drivers can load more onto the trailer and stay the right side of the law
