​Think you are suddenly seeing a lot more EVs on the road? You’re not imagining it. Number crunchers at the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) have calculated that British car buyers are now being offered twice the number of models now compared to 2023, with 171 fully electric models now available to UK buyers and manufacturers launching the equivalent of one new EV every fortnight for the past three years. These sit in price lists alongside 109 plug-in hybrids.

The Society’s spreadsheets also show the average range has risen quickly too, with full EVs now typically able to travel more than 300 miles on a single charge, well above the 127 miles driven weekly by the average UK driver. 

The rapid rollout of battery electric cars, alongside advances across hybrid and conventional engine technologies, is helping to cut new car CO₂ emissions by 505,130 tonnes a year, the SMMT claims. This is based on the average CO₂ in 2025 compared with 2023, with an average mileage of 7,500 per year, and 2,020,520 registrations in 2025.

Mike Hawes, SMMT Chief Executive, said: "Britain’s new car market has never offered so much choice, with a new electric model arriving every fortnight and zero emission motoring now available in every shape and size of vehicle. Industry investment is delivering the products, performance and range drivers need, while compelling offers are helping more people make the switch. For those still facing barriers or uncertainty, the huge range of hybrid and lower emission models means drivers can still make drastic cuts to their carbon footprint, keeping the UK firmly on the road to net zero.”
