Used electric cars are rapidly gaining popularity in the UK, with sales jumping by over 44% compared with the same period in 2024 according to SMMT data.
That means that one in 25 used car buyers opted for an EV in the first three quarters of 2025 – making up a total of 80,614 transactions. As a result, second-hand EVs accounted for a record 4.0% of the 2 million used cars sold in the UK in the first three quarters of 2025.
“Recent growth in the used electric car market shows that more buyers are being won over by the low running costs and enjoyable driving experience of EVs,” said Ginny Buckley, Editor-in-Chief of Electrifying.com. “A healthy used market is vital to making electric cars affordable and keeping monthly costs of new EVs down.”
It’s no surprise that used EVs are becoming much more popular; the variety of used electric cars now available is better than ever, and is only improving further as the latest EVs trickle down to the nearly-new and used car forecourts.
Plus, with longer range electric cars now becoming widely available to buy used, it’s possible to get an EV with over 350 miles of range and ultra-rapid charging for well under £30,000, making a used electric car a great option even for high mileage drivers and single-car households.
