Vauxhall Frontera gets bigger battery and longer range

Deliveries haven’t even begun for the Vauxhall Frontera Electric, but it’s already been updated with the addition of a bigger, 54kWh battery for a WLTP range of 253 miles. And all for £27,495, which makes the Frontera Electric Extended Range very competitive on price and range next to other compact crossover rivals like the Ford Puma Gen-E, Citroen e-C3 Aircross and Renault 4.

You’ll still be able to opt for the Frontera with the 44kWh LFP battery that it was always going to be offered with in the UK, and which starts at £23,995 for a 188 mile WLTP range. But, this bigger battery option will likely fare a bit better with many buyers valuing the convenience and peace of mind that a longer range can bring, so we’re all in favour of the 54kWH (51kWh usable) li-ion NMC battery joining the Frontera range.

No surprises that the big batter Frontera gets the same 111bhp, 192lb ft front-mounted motor as the smaller-battery version, so still a 13-second 0-62mph trundle and 88mph top speed. Not exactly hot hatch figures, but let’s be honest – this is about efficient family life, not Nürburgring lap times.

Charging-wise, the Frontera Extended Range supports 100kW DC, so you can charge from 20-80% in 28 minutes.

Whether the Frontera will qualify for the new UK Electric Car Grant remains to be confirmed but its sibling, the Citroën e-C3 Aircross (built in the same Slovakian factory and sharing tech), has already made the list – albeit for the lower-tier £1,500 grant.

With that same grant in place on the Vauxhall, the Frontera would actually start from £22,495 for the 44kWh model, or £25,995 for the 54kWh model.

That said, you might be waiting a little while. Although orders are open for the Frontera Electric, deliveries have been pushed back slightly due to delays in ramping up production.

Keep an eye on Electrifying.com for updates on which electric cars are eligible for the Electric Car Grant.
