The end of the Polestar 2 marks a new chapter for the brand

Polestar has officially ended production of its longstanding 2, the car that put the firm on the EV map, but never fear – there’s a new Polestar 2 arriving in 2027.

We don’t know much about the new Polestar 2, despite the fact that it’s planned to go on sale in summer 2027, but there’s plenty of information to be found just below the surface.

Incidentally, Polestar is keen to point out that while production has ended, it does actually have enough of the cars in stock to last until next year in case you want one. It's also an excellent used buy.

The new car should come with 800V charging tech, 400-plus miles of range and a suitable sharp styling upgrade, as well as a price tag that starts under £50k.

What will the new Polestar 2 look like?

Polestar has a new(ish) head of design in Philipp Römers, who took over from Max Missoni in August 2024.

Next year’s 2 will be the first car that Römers has been able to influence, and he’s going to give us a taste of what he’d like the next generation of Polestars to look like when his Formula 2030 concept car is unveiled any day now (it was promised for October…).

As for the practicalities of the 2, we understand that it will represent an evolution of the current car, with a familiar shape, though perhaps even a little lower and sleeker than before.

Where will the new Polestar 2 be built?

Polestar hasn’t yet confirmed where the new car will be built – it could move, but it could also stay in the same place.

The Polestar 2 has been in production since 2020 at Geely’s so-called ‘CMA Super Factory’ in Luqiao on the east coast a few hundred miles south of Shanghai.

The factory name refers to the CMA platform that underpins the likes of the Polestar 2, Volvo EX40 and a number of Lynk & Co models, but it’s likely that the new 2 will ditch that platform in favour of something that’s bespoke for electric cars, like the company’s SPA2 or SPA3 platforms.

SPA3 is what the new Volvo EX60 has been built on, while the slightly older SPA2 engineering sits underneath the likes of the Polestar 3 and Volvo EX90 models.

The platform change doesn’t necessarily mean a factory change will be needed – the CMA platform is slowly being retired, so it makes sense to upgrade the factory to something even more super.

Where are other Polestar models made?

The Polestar 3 is made at Volvo’s US plant in Ridgeville, South Carolina – ironically the factory was chosen to circumvent Donald Trump’s tariffs on Chinese-built cars and then he went and banned Polestar from selling in the country at all.

The Polestar 4 is built at a Renault plant in Korea after parent company Geely bought a slice of Renault Korea in 2022.

Because the Polestar 5 uses a fancy aluminium body, it is primarily put together at a Geely factory in Chongqing, before final assembly takes place on a production line in Wuhan adjacent to its sibling model the Lotus Eletre.

Are any Polestars made in Europe?

Not currently, but the company’s upcoming Polestar 7 SUV in 2028 is set to be made at a new factory that’s being built in Slovakia that will also have the production line for Volvo’s new EX50 model that’s planned for reveal at some point early in 2027.

It truly is the end of an era though – the Polestar 2 was the first car that really showed established carmakers could take the fight to the likes of the Tesla Model 3. A moment of silence, if you will.
