Volkswagen has revealed a new electric California camper that’s based on the ID.Buzz electric MPV – and it's a bit later than the 2025 model we were promised years ago...
The ID.California Cruise, as the new van is known, was officially unveiled at a caravan show in Düsseldorf and is set to be the first in a new series of electric campers to be launched by Volkswagen between now and 2028.

The new ID.California Cruise is going on sale in Germany at the beginning of 2027, price from €60,761 (£52,055) – but Volkswagen UK says that this model won’t be coming to Britain, sadly, though it has teased another model that we can expect to hear about in the next few months.
The new electric camper is a basic conversion of the ID.Buzz – it doesn’t have a pop-up roof – but Volkswagen says that it will be great for weekends away and road trips.

It comes with a double bed measuring 2.03 metres long and 1.30 metres wide, two folding chairs and a camping table, blackout blinds for all the windows and ventilation grilles for the side windows at the front.
VW also says that you’ll get a blind for the roof if the optional panoramic glass roof is also installed.
An extra control unit allows occupants to control certain functions from the back of the van, such as lighting and heating. Volkswagen says the ID.California Cruise can maintain a ‘comfortable sleeping temperature’ for up to 48 hours depending on how much juice you have in the battery, which is a very long snooze indeed.

There are USB plugs in the back of the ID.California Cruise that are supplied with constant power, so you can charge your devices while parked up and sleeping comfortable for 48 hours.
The camper also comes with V2L as standard, offering up to 3.6kW of electrical power for any of the essential bits of equipment that you want to take on your escape to the countryside.

Volkswagen says that the ID.California Cruise is based on the ID.Buzz Pro model, and can be ordered in long or short wheelbase format.
Now that we’ve seen the basic version of what can be done with the ID.Buzz we’re excited to see what Volkswagen comes up with next – we’ll expect to see a proper version of the California with a built-in kitchen and pop-top roof coming at some point soon.
